Sociological Analysis of the Impact of Social Inequality on Social Apathy (Case of study: Ahvaz city citizens)

Abstract
Statistical data and daily experiences in Iran reveal a significant level of social inequality, alongside a growing trend of social apathy. Considering the parallel changes of these two phenomena, the main question raised in this research is “What effect can social inequality have on this phenomenon?” As such, this study aims to investigate the impact of social inequality on social apathy. This research was conducted using quantitative methods and surveys (a questionnaire). The study population consisted of the citizens of Ahvaz city aged 15 and above. A sample of 384 subjects was selected through multi-stage random sampling. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS and Smart PLS software. The results of this study indicate that the sense of social inequality and social apathy in the sample population is higher than the average threshold. The degree of social apathy exhibited by individuals varies significantly based on age, gender, and ethnicity, while the perception of social inequality, with a standard regression size effect of 0.4, can account for 16% of variance in people's social apathy. According to the findings, when individuals in society believe they are being discriminated against and deprived of equal opportunities compared to others, they tend to grow disinterested and detached, viewing this behavior as a justified and acceptable response. The prevalence of such attitudes and behaviors may bring about adverse repercussions across various dimensions of the social structure.
