Abstract
Family, as the first and most crucial institution of socialization, can act both as a factor and a barrier to social deviance. The main goal of this study is to identify family factors underpinning the tendency to social deviance through a systematic review of secondary data from 2001 to 2025. Using the quantitative meta-analysis method, we extracted 59 valid Persian studies from the scientific databases of Jihad Daneshgahi, Normagz, Magiran, and the Iranian Journals Database, which were then analyzed by CMA2 software and the Fisher and Cohen test. The findings suggest that several social factors (family trust, social acceptance and support, disintegrated family, family cohesion and social control), psychological (self-esteem, identity crisis, social isolation and family emotional crisis), cultural (religious affiliation, cultural capital, chaotic parenting style and generation gap), economic (family economic capital, relative-financial deprivation and family economic participation) and contextual factors (family dimension, age, social class and education) have a bearing on inclination towards social deviance. According to the findings, designing and implementing national awareness campaigns to promote assertive and loving parenting style, teaching communication skills and conflict resolution to couples and parents, strengthening social capital in the neighborhoods through creation and support of local institutions, NGOs and neighborhood-centered programs, establishing an integrated screening and timely intervention system in schools and social health centers of neighborhood for early identification of at-risk adolescents (focusing on indicators such as broken families, emotional crisis, and relative deprivation) and referring them to counseling, psychotherapy, and social support services are among the key mechanisms for preventing deviance in Iranian society. Ultimately, this study exhibits that tackling social deviance requires moving beyond a shortsighted view and adopting a comprehensive, multidimensional, and integrated model that simultaneously focuses on strengthening protective factors (family institutional cohesion, social control, collective capital, preservation of cultural traditions and norms, promotion of self-esteem, identity formation, and education) and weakening risk factors (persistent unemployment, relative deprivation, chaotic parenting style, diminished social alienation, and value-generation gap) within the family institution.
