Abstract
Prostitution is a phenomenon that has been present in human societies for a long time, and the most humiliation and its consequences have been suffered by women who provide sexual services. Despite its economic benefits, this social phenomenon has destructive consequences for society and destroys the human dignity of women and families. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the context of prostitution from the perspective of prostituted women in Tehran. In this qualitative study, which was conducted using thematic analysis, the study population consisted of 10 women involved in the phenomenon of prostitution in Tehran, who were selected using purposive and snowball sampling methods. These individuals differed in terms of individual, family, social, economic, and cultural characteristics. The data collection tool was a semi-structured interview, and the data were analyzed using the content analysis method. The results of data analysis are six main themes (family turmoil, inappropriate relationships, social harm, economic problems, traumatic situations, and cultural and traditional problems) and 16 subthemes (homelessness, addiction in the family, emotional-sexual deprivation, crisis-avoidant marriage, traumatic social relationships, escape from commitment and responsibility, sexual activism that violates norms, men's sexual view of women, failure in social status, failure in high-paying employment, gender gap and inequality in employment, family economic weakness, workplace contaminated with sexual issues, traumatic environment, weakness of traditions and modern lifestyle, and weakness of beliefs). Prostitution is a multi-factorial phenomenon that arises from troubled families, crime-prone environments, damaged society, a culture full of contradictions, and poverty.
