Abstract
Exploring the media expectations of the elderly, which stem from their needs, is essential for healthy aging. Thus, this research attempts to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the media expectations of the elderly based on their lived experiences. This study employs a phenomenological approach, a purposive sampling method, and semi-structured interviews. Data were collected from interviews with 34 older adults aged 60 to 75 in Isfahan in 2024. Following the data collection, Colaizzi's 7-step method for analyzing qualitative data was used. The data validity was confirmed using the techniques of variability, reliability and alignment of researchers. After extracting and categorizing the data, seven main themes were identified: well‑being improvement, reduced loneliness, self‑disclosure, intergenerational adaptation, enhanced dignity, role fulfillment, and spirituality enhancement. These main themes comprised 16 subthemes, including health literacy, online healthcare services, strengthened communication, identification, leisure engagement, sharing concerns, memory recall, personality recognition, acceptance of differences, acceptance of family nuclearization, unbiased representation, provision and exchange of information, skill enhancement, independence, and spiritual intelligence. These subthemes were derived from 200 concepts, through which the media expectations of older adults were elucidated. The breadth of expectancy‑related concepts identified among older adults in this study highlights their diverse media needs. Therefore, incorporating these needs into media programming and content production is essential. Moreover, aligning the programs and interventions of governmental and non-governmental institutions with these needs can significantly facilitate the realization of active aging. Addressing these needs can fulfill older adults’ expectations in the domains of well-being, self-disclosure, intergenerational adaptation, social dignity, role fulfillment, and spirituality, thereby leading to an enhanced quality of life in old age.
