A Sociological Study of the Mediating Role of Organizational Accountability in the Relationship Between Social Anomie and Institutional Trust (Case Study: 18-65 Years-Old Citizens in Shushtar City)

Abstract

In any society, trust is the prelude to cooperation. Trust in institutions and organizations, as one of the important components of social capital, plays a key role in regulating the social communication network, social cohesion, an enhanced culture of participation and all-around development of the societies. This concept is influenced by various factors. This study examines the mediating role of organizational accountability in the relationship between social anomie and institutional trust among people in the age range of 18 to 65 years in Shushtar city. To do so, a sample of 383 citizens, who were selected by the stratified random sampling method, was surveyed. The sample size was determined by the Cochran formula. A self-designed questionnaire was employed to measure the constructs of social anomie and institutional trust, and Bovens’ (2005) standard questionnaire was used to measure the construct of organizational accountability. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 22 and AMOS 16 software. The results suggested that social anomie has a significant and inverse relationship with institutional trust, so that high social anomie is associated with low institutional trust. The descriptive findings revealed that the mean institutional trust of the subjects is lower than the mean value. The results also indicated that social anomie has an inverse and significant relationship with institutional trust so that elevated social anomie is linked to decreased institutional trust. A significant relationship was also observed between organizational accountability and institutional trust. According to the results of the path analysis, the model variables could explain 64% of the variance in institutional trust. Hence, it can be posited that compared to other variables included in the model, the organizational accountability plays a key role in forming the institutional trust among citizens of Shushtar.
