Abstract
Social trust is one of the social phenomena that plays a vital role in social relationships. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explain social trust (personal, generalized, and institutional) among citizens of Birjand city. The research method is survey and all citizens aged 15 to 65 living in Birjand city make up the statistical population; the sample size was 384 people selected through a combined sampling method. The findings indicate that 50.6% of Birjandi citizens have lower social trust compared to the general public and political, economic, educational, religious, and public institutions. Overall, the level of social trust is below average, and comparison of social trust indicators shows that personal trust among the research sample is higher than generalized and institutional trust. The research findings indicate a significant positive correlation between the sense of security and its three dimensions with social trust among citizens of Birjand city. Based on multiple regression analysis, the determination coefficient, independent variables, and institutional trust indicate that these variables explain and predict about 37% of its changes. The determination coefficient of independent variables and generalized trust also shows that about 46% of its changes can be explained and predicted by the variables entered in the model. Additionally, according to the results of path analysis, the first variable that has the greatest impact on social trust is "sense of political security".
