Abstract
The purpose of this research is to design a model of social sustainability in urban environments and to compare it in the cities of Tehran and Zahedan. The current research is applied-developmental in terms of its purpose and is included in the category of mixed exploratory research. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interview method with experts and theme analysis technique were used. For this purpose, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 21 academic and executive experts in the field of urban management who were selected purposefully. In the quantitative stage, in order to validate the model, structural equation modeling method was used. For this purpose, 136 senior managers of Tehran and Zahedan municipalities, who were selected by a simple random sampling method, were asked for their opinions using a questionnaire. Based on the findings of thematic analysis, seven components including education, poverty, unemployment, internet, health, population increase and economic inequality and 78 indicators were identified for social sustainability. The results of the research showed that social sustainability in urban environments is a multidimensional and complex phenomenon, and a set of variables must be taken into account for its realization. In addition, based on the findings of the research, the social stability situation in the cities of Tehran and Zahedan as two representative cities of Iran is not very acceptable and on the other hand, there is a big gap between these two cities in various indicators.
