Abstract

One of the important topics in political geography is the level of political participation of different ethnic groups of a country in the decision making process in order to create a sense of national solidarity and integration of the country. Khuzestan province, with its diverse ethnic composition, has seen a decrease in political participation during the last two elections, namely the 11th election cycle of the Islamic Council in 2018 and the 13th cycle of the presidential election in 2018, so that less than half of the eligible candidates in the two elections have participated. Therefore, the purpose of the current research was to qualitatively analyze the causes of the decrease in political participation in Khuzestan province by thematic analysis method. The studied population was the political elites of Khuzestan province, 18 samples were selected with targeted and chain methods, and the data was collected through in-depth interviews. The validity of the research was obtained by using the methods of members' validity and research review, and reliability was obtained by the intra-subject agreement method. The findings of the research showed that the reasons for the decrease in political participation in Khuzestan province are: 1) popular factors, 2) governance factors, 3) institutional factors, and 4) side factors
