Abstract
Symbolic unity, as one of the basic requirements of social order, has always been the subject of theoretical and experimental inquires. Considering the various effects of symbolic unity on different aspects of society's life, the purpose of this research was to investigate the factors affecting the level of symbolic unity of societies. The current research was conducted using the panel analysis of data of 89 countries) 1981-2020. (The findings show that the level of post-materialism of society's culture provides the necessary context to reduce the level of symbolic unity of the societies. Also, migration and the level of cosmopolitan communication of societies, due to the expansion of the value horizon and the introduction of different values from other societies, lead to the emergence of different identities and, as a result, the reduction of the collective conscience, according to Emile Durkheim, or the subsequent reduction of the level of symbolic unity in societies. The findings have also shown that the level of previous economic development of societies has a reducing effect on the level of subsequent symbolic unity of societies. In general, and considering the consequentialness of the symbolic unity problem for societies as a prerequisite for societal development, and the potential risk of social disorder, especially for transitional and fragile societies, Cultural planners and policymakers need to pay more serious attention to the problem of symbolic unity and social order.
