The Relationship between Individualism and Gender Equality with the Value of Marriage (Case Study: Unmarried Girls Aged 20 to 34 in Tehran)

Abstract
 
Attitudes are the basis of behavior and any changes in people's values ​​and attitudes can lead to behavioral changes. Similarly, a change in the value of a marriage can also delay marriage and ultimately make individuals avoid marriage. Some of the cultural changes over the last two decades include the rise of individualism and gender equality among women and girls in society under the influence of modernity and feminism. The purpose of this article is to investigate the contribution of individualism and gender equality on the value of marriage among unmarried girls aged 20-34 in Tehran. The data of the study are the result of a survey collected in 2019 using a questionnaire completed by 600 unmarried girls. The findings of the study indicate a significant effect of individualism and gender equality on the value of girls' marriage. There was a negative relationship found in the results; therefore, with increasing individualism and gender equality, we see that girls value marriage less. In addition, the relationship between the respondents' personal characteristics and the value of marriage was also examined. The relationship between girls' age and the value of marriage was positive. The variables of education level, income level and use of social networks were negatively related to marriage value. That is, the girls who had higher education and higher income and used social networks such as Telegram, Facebook, etc., valued marriage less and vice versa. This finding emphasizes the need for proper cultural management of the new generation in this field. Thus, women and girls can be led to a correct and timely marriage if their deserved demands are respected.
