Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between religiosity of Iranians and their attitude toward democracy. The subjects of the study consisted of 383 students (both male and female) from Shiraz University, and the data was collected through a questionnaire in spring 2004. To determine the relationship, the writers used Max Weber's theory. Students' religiosity was measured using the multi-dimensional model of Glock and Stark. The findings of the study showed that the subjects were favorably inclined toward democracy and that a large proportion of the sample was quite religious. Further, the findings showed a significant relationship between religiosity and its various dimensions (ideological, experiential, ritualistic and sequential) and the students' attitude toward democracy and its dimensions. Also, the findings showed that the more religious the students were, the more negative their attitude toward democracy was.
